Information Security

In today's digital landscape, personal information has become more valuable than the cash in your wallet. Cybersecurity breaches are increasingly common, and the likelihood that your data has already been compromised on the dark web is alarmingly high. As highlighted in a recent Forbes article titled "It’s 2024 and Your Laptop Can Be Hacked with a BBQ Lighter" (Forbes.com, Davey W.), the need for vigilance has never been more critical. To enhance your cybersecurity and safeguard your Personally Identifiable Information (PII), consider these five essential practices:

Implement Password and Screen Locks: Your first line of defense against cyber threats is a strong password and screen lock. This simple measure protects your device from unauthorized access, including attempts to exploit Bluetooth vulnerabilities.

Conceal Your PIN: When making purchases, be vigilant about your surroundings. Check for any hidden cameras or suspicious individuals near the point-of-sale terminal. Being aware of your environment can help you avoid potential theft.

Always Request Identification: As someone with experience in handling credit card fraud cases, I advocate for merchants to request identification for all debit and credit card transactions. This not only deters fraudulent activity but also strengthens your position in the event of a dispute over a chargeback.

Keep Your Phone and Credit Cards Separate: Avoid storing all your credit cards in a sleeve attached to your cellphone. If your phone is stolen or lost while you are on a call, you inadvertently expose sensitive information to potential thieves.

Secure Your Vehicle: Never leave personal information or valuable items inside your vehicle, especially when unattended. Criminals often target unlocked cars and visible belongings. Always lock your doors and store items securely out of sight.

By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can significantly enhance your personal security. We encourage you to share any additional strategies you use to protect your information.
